Today is National Aboriginal Day…and its also the first day of summer.
National Aboriginal Day is a celebration of the diversity of aboriginal peoples in Canada: from the west coast through the plains to the east coast and throughout the northern regions of the country. Their is great beauty in Aboriginal art, culture, tradition, music and legends.
There have been many injustices done historically to Aboriginal peoples the world over, and Canada is no different. There’s no excuse for what has been done – or for the continuing inequalities many Aboriginal people face today.
In Iqaluit, National Aboriginal Day was celebrated with a show including musical talents from across the country, including Digging Roots – the band that won this year’s Juno for Aboriginal Album of the Year. I’ll report back on Wednesday as they are also performing tomorrow night. Stay tuned!
Happy National Aboriginal Day!
